Learn how to program Flash games

I’ve just set up a brand new 2 day training course to teach you everything I know about making Flash games! It’s in Brighton (of course) on the 8th and 9th of February (the week after the Papervision training).

We’ll be covering all the fun stuff, collisions, physics, optimisation, actionscript animation and working with graphical assets and sound. I’ve just put the first draft of the itinerary together and I’m really excited about it – it’s all of my very favourite things about programming ActionScript. :-)

And of course we’ll be using my portfolio of games as case studies, including Jambuster (BBC), Extreme Pamplona (Sure for Men), The Simple Game (Philips) and we’ll even be diving into the code for LunarLander3D in detail.

Early bird pricing is only £250 for 2 days and there are 4 student places, so please book early to ensure your space.

Ack! The pain of knowing I can’t attend is too much. Dare a man hope you’ll publish slides / example code after the fact?

    • Hi James, sorry you can’t make it! I doubt I’ll be releasing all the course materials into the public domain, but I’m sure I’ll be running this course again later in the year. Where are you based?

  2. Cédric says:

    Hi Seb,
are you planning to visit us in Paris?
It would be great to have this course here!

    • Hi Cédric, I’d definitely be interested in bringing this to Paris? Do you think there’d be enough demand for it? Do you know any user groups who may be able to help me set it up? Or perhaps it’s worth you coming to Brighton? It’s only a couple of hours on Eurostar. :-) Mail me to continue this discussion. sebleedelisle at gmail.

would it be possible to buy the course material ? like cedric i’m living in Paris and even if there is an eurostar, it’s not always convenient to go to england…

  4. What prior knowledge is recommended for the course?
Experience with flash? Ability to turn on a computer? :-)

    • Hi Steve, anyone with a little ActionScript 3 experience should be OK, but if you’re an absolute beginner, it’ll be worth getting up to speed on the basics of programming beforehand. Hope this helps!

Hey Seb. I’m gutted that I can’t afford this, I’d love to attend. I think you should offer a placement for “the designer most hit by the recession” too ;)

Will you be doing a course at FOTB10?

  6. Tim Morgan says:

Any chance you would teach these courses state side? Please?

  7. Billy Deakin says:

    Hi Seb

The itinerary looks quite good, just a little concerned that there will be too much basics to warrent coming all the way to Brighton. It the course mostly pitched for beginners, or will there be enough content in there for intermediate or more advanced games developers too?

Also how much time are you likely to be spending on multi-player? And will that be for a specific socket server, or in general?

    Thanks

    Bill

    • Hi Billy, I will be covering the basics but I still think that even experienced game devs will benefit. It’s always good to see how other people do things, right? And I will be getting in quite deep pretty quick. As for the multiplayer stuff, this could take a 2 day workshop just by itself :-) So I’ll spend an hour looking at getting up and running with the basics, probably using SmartFox or Electrotank or both :-) I’ll also have source code for a simple multiplayer 3D shooting game.

Please feel free to ask any more questions or put in any requests :-)

Thanks for the quick response Seb – sounds good! Just need to double check that I can make those dates and I’ll book up!
